Understanding How PTSD and TBI Affect Veterans
Is Vital for Spouses and Families

Often overlooked is the toll taken on their family members. As more veterans battle PTSD and TBI, an increasing number of military spouses are facing battles of their own.
2.7 million Americans have served in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Of those:
  • At least 540,000 of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans have PTSD.
  • Over 500,00 have been diagnosed with TBI
  • 378,000 suffer from both PTS and TBI
  • 31% of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have a mental health condition
  • 2 out of 3 suffering from combat injuries have failing marriages
  • 10% of military spouses admit they have considered suicide.
  • 75% of veterans return from war suffering from PTS and TBI
Statistics according to the National Center for PTS
Picture
  • Combat veterans suffering from PTSD account for 21% of domestic violence cases nationwide.
  • 22% of all combat casualties are traumatic brain injuries
  • Veterans represent 20% of all suicides in the U.S. — approximately 22 per day.
When combat veterans with PTSD or a Traumatic Brain Injury return home, their transition into civilian life can be extremely challenging. Often war has forever changed these veterans, which often makes the elation of their apparent safe return short lived. Most spouses have no idea how their lives will change and receive little if any information on what to expect. Often veterans with PTSD exhibit symptoms such as memory loss, aggression, alcoholism and violence.
The spouse is the closest to the veteran and in the greatest position of helping to manage the PTSD and TBI symptoms. Education is vital for the spouse who provides caregiver support and lessens the chance they and their families will become one of the devastating statistics associated with combat veterans.
